Sarita Allen is a world-renowned professional dancer
whose career has spanned across three decades. Sarita began her studies in Seattle, Washington at the acclaimed Cornish School of the Arts. She then moved to New York City on scholarship
with the Dance Theater of Harlem. It was here that she began her two parallel careers - of performer and
of fitness teacher. Having met her mentor Kathy Grant, who is considered one of the two grand dames of the
Pilates technique and was taught and certified by Joseph H. Pilates himself, Sarita began her career as a personal fitness
instructor.
To retain and develop her competitive edge as a professional dancer, Sarita
realized the absolute need to continuously seek innovative teachers, who worked on both the physical and the mental development
of the individual. She then began to train directly with Julio Horvath, the inventor of the Gyrotonic Expansion
System. To give a brief history of her growth as a professional fitness teacher in the last few years, Sarita was in Tokyo,
Japan (2000) where she was a guest teacher/instructor for the top academics in Japan as a part of their training into fitness.
In 2002 she taught at the University of Salvador in Brazil, teaching both Dance and Pilates, as a part of the International
Dance Festival in Bahia. In 2003 Sarita was in Istanbul, Turkey at the Planet Health Spa to teach their trainers
in the philosophy and technique of traditional Pilates. In the United States she has taught master classes and extensive fitness
workshops at UCLA, Tisch School of the Arts, New York University, Dean college, Spellman college, just to name a few. During
her tenure as principal dancer with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, she also served as their company
teacher. Her relationship with the company has spanned more than twenty years. Most notable performances include The Metropolitan
Opera house, The Paris Opera, La Scala, The Pyramids at Giza, Tivili Theater in Copenhagen, The White House for the inaugurations
of Presidents Bill Clinton and Gerald Ford. In 2004 she received an award for her contribution to the international dance
at the Bolshoi Theater during the Moscow Ballet Festival.. She currently teaches in New York City at The DL FIT Pilates
Wellness Studio, formerly ThePilates Edge Studio and performs with COMPLEXIONS Contemporary Ballet,
where she is embarking on a tour of Italy, Athens, Greece, and Seoul, Korea.
Besides pursuing her professional growth, Sarita has also worked in community
development as her wish to give back to the society that she has learned so much from. She served for four years as Artist-in-Residence
for the Dorothy I. Height Leadership Institute under the auspices of The National Council of Negro Women where she produced
four productions entitled "Reflections of the Soul." Sarita has also been an instructor with the Alvin Ailey Company
at public schools across the country as a part of the outreach program. At present Sarita is an integral
member of the Outreach programs hosted by COMPLEXIONS Contemporary Ballet, which aim at fostering creativity and freedom of
